IPL Laser Hair Removal

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is used for various aesthetic treatments including hair removal. IPL is not a traditional laser treatment. While lasers use one specific wavelength of light, IPL uses a broad spectrum. The principle behind IPL hair removal is selectively targeting melanin, the pigment in hair.

IPL is a popular technology for hair removal that uses broad-spectrum light to target melanin in the hair, damaging the follicle to inhibit future growth. It is generally considered effective, especially for individuals with lighter skin tones and darker hair, but it requires multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. The suitability, effectiveness, and number of sessions needed depend largely on individual skin and hair type, and a professional consultation is usually recommended before starting treatment.

How IPL Works

Broad Spectrum Light: IPL devices emit a range of light waves that are tuned and targeted at melanin to disrupt the hair growth cycle.

Selective Photothermolysis: The light energy is absorbed by the dark pigment in the hair, which is then converted into heat. This heat damages the hair follicle, reducing or preventing future growth.

Hair Growth Cycle: IPL is most effective on hairs in the anagen phase (growth phase) of their life cycle, meaning multiple treatments are usually needed to catch all hairs in this phase.

Effectiveness and Suitability

Skin and Hair Types: IPL tends to be more effective on people with light skin and dark hair because the contrast allows for better targeting of the hair follicle. It may not be suitable for those with dark skin tones or very light hair, as there is a risk of skin damage and the treatment may be less effective, respectively.

Duration and Sessions: The treatment usually requires multiple sessions for optimal results.

Pain and Safety: It is generally less painful than other hair removal lasers, and when performed correctly by a trained professional, it is a safe option for hair removal.
